The Staying Cozy/Saving Money Family Energy Fair will help local homeowners and renters learn about the simple things they can do to reduce their energy use while saving money and the environment. “May the best of last year be the worst of this year” is a familiar toast at New Year’s Eve, and so far, so good as merchants and realtors in the Rivertowns are approaching 2012 with cautious optimism.Problems with consumer confidence, a shaky economy and job market and the European debt crisis – factors that contributed to holding back the real estate market – have been mitigated. They’ve not completely disappeared, however, and while there might be more of the same, the outlook is slightly more positive. more »

Eight trustee seats in the villages of Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and Irvington will be up for grabs in the March 20 elections.
At least two new elected officials will be sworn in as incumbent Sleepy Hollow trustees Tom Capossela, who has served for more than six years, and David Schroedel will not be seeking new two-year terms.
Two separate slates of candidates have emerged in Sleepy Hollow. The Democratic ticket, which will also run on the Independent line, will be headed by incumbent Trustee Karin Wompa, who is seeking a third term. Wompa chairs the Downtown Revitalization Corporation and reestablished the Environmental Advisory Council. more »

Julie Wright has a good reason to recall when books lent out at Warner Library were stamped by hand rather than scanned electronically as they are now. Her mother, Mary Lawson, “was a fixture at Warner Library for many years,” she wrote in a note to the Library. Lawson was children’s librarian from 1947 through 1968, and according to her daughter, she “introduced the summer reading program and enjoyed reading stories to the children.” more »
