Raymond E. McGovern: Former Tarrytown Trustee
Raymond E. McGovern, who served on the Board of Trustees in Tarrytown for 18 years and began a political family dynasty, died May 2 in a car accident in Sleepy Hollow. He was 81.
Mr. McGovern graduated cum laude from St. Francis College in Brooklyn in 1951, and graduated first in his class, magna cum laude, from St. John’s School of Law, where he was editor of the St. John’s Law Review.
A United States Navy veteran, he played semi-professional basketball for the Bridgeport Bombers in the Industrial League before beginning a distinguished law career at Boal, McQuade and Fitzpatrick in New York City. He then joined BBDO Worldwide Inc., where he served as secretary and general counsel. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors. He held those same positions at Omnicom Group Inc., the largest holding company of advertising agencies in the world. He retired in 1995.
Mr. McGovern’s service in Tarrytown included stints as police and recreation commissioner. He was active and coached in Tarrytown Dad’s Club baseball, Scarlets football and CYO basketball. He recently joined the Tarrytown Senior Center. He also enjoyed traveling abroad, working out at the gym and eating with family at his favorite Italian restaurant.
Beloved husband of the late Anne Marie McGovern, he is survived by Raymond (Skip) E. Jr. (Becky); Keith (Ana); Laura Kiss (Tom); Jeff (Linda); Kyle (Anita); and 15 beloved grandchildren.
John Cappello: Former Sleepy Hollow resident
John J. Cappello, a former Sleepy Hollow resident, died May 11. He was 78.
Born March 23, 1931 in North Tarrytown, Mr. Cappello worked as a transportation supervisor for th Tarrytown Public School District for many years. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1955 and was a Life Active Member of Union Hose.
Frank Galella: Former Tarrytown resident
Frank J. Galella, a former Tarrytown resident who operated a barber shop on Main Street for many years, died April 9.
Mr. Galella was involved in the Normandy invasion and served in the European Theatre in World War II. He was a member of Washington Engine Co. #2 in Tarrytown.
Carolyn Townsend: Tarrytown resident
Carolyn F. Townsend, a resident of Tarrytown, died April 30. She was 65.
A graduate of Green Mountain College, she worked for many years as an office assistant and secretary for Avon Products, Geigy and Westchester Medical Center. She was a lifelong member of the Ardsley United Methodist Church, where her grandfather, Reverend Jesse Coddington, was pastor in the 1930s. She was a member of the church’s Methodist Women’s group, the choir, a Sunday School teacher, Fellowship Coordinator and a lay member of the Methodist Conference in 2007 and 2008. She was also a member of the Dobbs Ferry Women’s Club.
