Dining Destinations for Mother’s Day
Treating our wonderful mothers and grandmothers to a special brunch, dinner or festive time with the family is going to be a fun-filled experience, if you plan ahead. Our rivertown restaurants have a multitude of exceptional food offerings in store for the hard-working, loving women who deserve to be treated royally on their day of recognition.
Tarrytown:
Chiboust Bistro features an elegant brunch menu until 3p.m. and dinner until 9 p.m.: brioche French Toast, poached eggs on a croissant with gravlax, and hollandaise sauce, and Maryland Crab Cake accompanied by asparagus, poached eggs and sauce Choron. Small plates may include sweet corn fritters, blue crab mille feuille, braised short ribs, ruby and golden beet salad, or a charcuterie plate. May 9th’s daily specials tempt the palate with a foie gras Tourchon, an almond encrusted Chilean Sea Bass or a Waygu bacon avocado burger. Jill Roses’ desserts, including her famous Chiboust, will be mom’s “piece de la resistance.”
Jack and Dyl’s favorites, the ones his customers never let him take off the menu, will be available on Mother’s Day. In addition, he is featuring appetizers such as crab fritters with basil mojo and mango salsa, shrimp parmesan flatbread, and grilled asparagus with prosciutto, parmesan and truffle oil, plus his special entrees: salmon Wellington with tomato hollandaise, filet mignon with gratin potatoes, ricotta gnocchi with lobster and charred tomato-vermouth sauce.
Caravela’s owner, Fernando Cabral, is famous for his appreciation of mothers every year, and 2010 is no exception. Moms get a flower and glass of port, the perfect accompaniment to any Portuguese dish. Such delicacies might include pan-seared scallop, Brazilian hearts of palm salad, or chilled gazpacho Andaluz. Entrees, always served with rice and black beans plus vegetables, may be artisanal spinach fettucine, a braised loin of veal Madeira or the delicate braised and seared duck breast. Langostines “a la plancha” are stuffed with crabmeat. Caravela’s famed marsicada seafood stew (red or green sauce) and roast suckling pig will also be featured. And his traditional desserts – flan, floating island and fresh fruit tarts – will complete your Sunday meal with the perfect sweet.
And, don’t forget you can treat mom to a special afternoon tea at Silver Tips Tea Room. Enjoy signature tea sandwiches, assorted desserts and scones with cream and preserves. Free gifts for every mom. Seatings are at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30, and are by reservation only.
Equus, Castle on the Hudson, is offering a very special prix fixe 4 course meal, one that mom will remember for years to come. Dining in any one of “The Castle’s” impressive dining rooms, replete with stunning views of the river and gardens, filled with antiques and intricate tapestries, should make any mom feel like royalty. First courses of seared black angus beef carpaccio, or blue crab stuffed artichokes prepare you for the asparagus soup or local chevre and spinach salad. Entrees of lobster stuffed monkfish oil, heritage chicken breasts with seasonal asparagus (both white and green) and morels, or roast rack of lamb with a sweet potato gratin should melt mom’s heart. Closing the meal with mocha chocolate pudding cake or a strawberry rhubarb napolean is a fine way to say, “I love you.”
Sleepy Hollow:
Finalmente, Sleepy Hollow’s newest bright star on the restaurant firmament, will be presenting Dan Damiano’s new menu, but with the addition of a free glass of prosecco to all mothers. Finalmente will be opening at 1:00 p.m. May 9th and also accepting reservations.
Que Chula Es Puebla (see Cinquo de Mayo listing) will also be offering special traditional dishes, a tequila pineapple drink, and flowers for mom included in the Mother’s Day choices.
Irvington:
Il Sorriso’s Mother’s Day a la carte menu gives the family so many delightful Italian specialties to choose from, everyone will find it difficult to decide. Risotto Allegro Mamma will be made with artichokes, corn, cherry tomatoes and baby shrimp. Fagottino della Mamma, a fresh homemade pasta pillow stuffed with asparagus and salmon will be served with crab meat, calamari and baby shrimps. Cannelloni, delicate branzino, medallions of veal or braised short ribs or pollo della Mamma- fagottini filled with sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, asparagus and chicken are sure to delight.
Red Hat on the River’s prix fixe menu will be featuring such inviting appetizers as house-made rillettes – classic French duck and heirloom pork confit, crispy Peekytoe crabcake or an asparagus composed salad with Yukon gold potatoes, beets and mache, Entrees to warm your heart while you take in the breath-taking view, will be seared duck breast with sour cherry glace, grilled Atlantic salmon or a classic grilled hanger steak frites. Sweets for the sweet always include “something chocolate, a French lemon tarte or a crème fraiche panna cotta. Kids12 and under get to choose from their own menu.
Chutney Masala’s prix fixe Mother’s Day Passage to India Indian buffet, offering an extensive array of multi-regional dishes, will be served from noon to 3p.m. Choose from a varied assortment of chutneys, toasted papadum, and marvelous Indian breads, tandoori specialties, chicken tikka, creamy spinach (sag paneer), fragrant daals (lentils), tasty vegetarian dishes or owner Navjot Arora’s signature Goan fish curry. Dinner on Mother’s Day will be available from Chutney Masala’s menu.
Elmsford:
Leo Cattarini, owner and manager of Rinis will be honoring his and all hard-working mothers with a 3 course prix fixe Mother’s Day menu from 1 – 8 p.m. Reasonably priced at $28, the menu will include such appetizers as eggplant rollantine, Portobello polenta. Entrée choices may be a roasted Long Island duck or a rack of veal chops with portobellos, or sole gismondo (sautéed with spinach and artichokes). Rinis will also be offering a regular dinner menu for those interested.
