Old Dutch Church To Celebrate 325th Anniversary

Sitting among headstones in a graveyard and watching a rather spooky 1922 movie isn’t a situation that many people will ever experience. However, the opportunity to do that will be available to those who attend the 325th anniversary year events at the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow on Friday evening, June 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The scary movie, “Headless Horseman,” is silent, but from inside the candlelit church, a string quartet will fill the air with music.
It is all part of the community-wide party being thrown by Pastor Jeff Gargano to celebrate the anniversary of the church, the oldest in New York State. It has been registered as a National Historic Landmark and is among the few remaining original colonial Dutch buildings, as it stands just off Route 9.
The church was built in 1685, “just a few decades after Henry Hudson sailed up the river, “ Reverend Gargano said. “Everyone in the area loves the Old Dutch, and our summer worship services continue to attract visitors from all over the world,” he added. The summer services begin on Sunday, June 6, the weekend of the party.
Visitors on the evening of June 4 will also have the rare opportunity to view the 1715 “First Record Book” in Dutch that is normally kept locked away in the church’s vault.
There will also be rare prints and other artifacts from the earliest days of the church.
A reception will feature cheese, wine and “Dutch Treats.”
Among the old headstones in the three-acre burying ground are names associated with Washington Irvington’s story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” such as Katrina Van Tassel.
The church contains the crypt of its builder, Frederick Philipse, (1626-1702), whose manor house and gristmill are now within Philipsburg.
