Metered Parking Fees Increase In Tarrytown

In a time of stringent budgets, collecting a few more cents here and there apparently makes sense for Tarrytown and that includes increasing the cost of downtown parking.

One hour of parking at a village meter has risen to 75 cents, which means that each quarter plunked into a meter will get you five minutes less than it did prior to July 7. Tarrytown officials estimate that small change will add some $70,000 annually to the municipal coffers, according to Village Administrator Michael Blau.

Tossing in nickels and dimes won’t get drivers a parking meter bargain either, Blau said. The meters are adjusted to require 75 cents for an hour’s time and each coin will register a little less to meet that requirement. The meter fee changes were adopted as part of the current budget approved by the Board of Trustees. Metered parking during the past fiscal year brought in approximately $321, 000 according to Village Treasurer James Hart.

Yankee fans from out of town and local residents without parking permits also are continuing to contribute to the Tarrytown’s treasury. The special “Yankee Parking” lot on the west side of the Metro North Railroad tracks has brought in more than $11,000 through the end of June, according to figures provided by Blau and Hart.

The village opened the special lot last year, in collaboration with Propark America , a national parking company, for those motorists who want to use Metro North to travel to Yankee Stadium. That parking charge has also risen from its initial $8 last year to $10 this year, based on requirements by the parking company. Tarrytown splits The “Yankee Parking” revenue with Propark after expense are deducted. The special parking operates Monday through Friday, on “a first come, first served basis,” as described by the village. Yankee parking is also available in the residents’ lot on the east side of the tracks during weekends.

With the roundtrip rail ticket cost of $8.50 from Tarrytown to Yankee Stadium and the $10 parking fee in the village, fans are still spending less and facing less hassle than parking in lots adjacent to the stadium where the minimum cost is $23, and the maximum is approximately $36.

The total revenue Tarrytown derived from all of its parking fees, including meters and permit parking, has amounted to about $885,000, Hart noted.
