Good-Life Gourmet Catering To Open Store in Irvington

Good-Life Gourmet, a high-end catering company serving Westchester, Southern Connecticut and New York City, is expanding its reach to the public with a store opening this fall. Chef/Owner Eric C. Korn refers to his offerings as “quirky, and we hope our customers find them the same way … fun and quirky.”
The shop will offer a selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads and will introduce its Good-Life Gourmet Meals for take-home that are “like having your own private chef at home, cooking with fresh, wholesome ingredients,” said Korn. “These will look like real meals on your dinner table, not (some) food on a plate that you’d find in restaurants.”
The shop in Irvington, at 108 Main Street, serves as the location for the company’s kitchen and there, one gourmet sandwich, one soup and one salad are offered each day on a rotating basis.
“The only set item on our menu will be a Fluffernutter, our favorite sandwich growing up,” Korn said.
A second shop in Scarsdale at 13 Spencer Place on the premises of the former Michael’s Gourmet, a landmark for over 30 years, will offer a variety of gourmet sandwiches, soups and salads that are ever-changing.
Good-Life Gourmet is one of the first food service operations in the area, if not the first, to rely predominantly on the convenience of technology -- mobile texting and Bluetooth -- to inform its clientele, or “our Food Family, as we call them,” said Korn, of menu choices for each day. Clients in turn will be able to order and pay for their food through text messaging.
“We want to be known as that quirky but exquisite little sandwich shop, offering top quality foods and preparation with a sense of culinary adventure. And getting down to business, we are aiming for the title of Best Sandwich in Westchester,” Korn said, “and the way to do that is to make things simple in choice but very grand in concept.”
For Good-Life Gourmet Meals, Korn described its slogan, “like having your own private chef at home,” as reflecting its preparation by hand, taking great time and care, and formulated to reflect the double-meaning of the term ‘Good-Life.’
“Each day’s dinner selection will be created to be ‘good’ tasting and to be ‘good’ for you , using no artificial ingredients or flavorings,” he added.
“Good” also refers to “good works” for Good-Life Gourmet which has formed a partnership with Westhab, the largest non-profit provider of affordable housing and supportive services in Westchester County.
“I am working with Westhab’s Achieve Program which partners with businesses to train young people to learn job skills,” said Korn. “It’s my pleasure to train these enterprising young people for careers in the food service business.”
Korn estimated Good-Life Gourmet will be able to employ as many as 15 young workers from Westhab this year.
Korn, 27, is a graduate of The French Culinary Institute, which he attended after a brief stint in the insurance industry following college. “I feel like the luckiest guy alive, doing what I really love, cooking for people, relating directly to them and receiving their feedback,” he said.
In a pre-opening promotion, two free Good-Life Gourmet Meals will be given to future customers who request an e-voucher on Facebook.com at Good-Life Gourmet.
“Once they try us, people will want to be a member of our ‘Food Family’ for life,” Korn said.
