The Rivertowns’ Community News Source

Now into its eighteenth year, The Indy, as our news website is known among many of its followers, continues to adhere to its mission of accurately informing residents of Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Irvington, Tarrytown, and Sleepy Hollow about the wide range of activities that affect their daily lives. Impartial coverage of topics that range from government, schools, real estate and business, to sports, social events and personalities, has made us an important and trusted source of information in the rivertowns.

Initially a monthly newspaper with a free circulation mailed to 19,000 households, The Hudson Independent has since 2020 been entirely internet-based. Prior to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, our website (www.thehudsonindependent.com) served mainly as an archive for stories in the print edition, plus a calendar of local events. Since the lockdown and the resulting suspension of our print edition, the site has become a full-service platform for news and events, updated on a daily basis. Its Community Bulletin Board, which began as a repository for services and resources related to the social and economic impact of the pandemic, has evolved into a wide-ranging resource for ongoing community activities, complementing our daily Events calendar. The site also links to videos, including a monthly TV show, Indy Talks, featuring interviews with local newsmakers. When significant news breaks, we inform thousands of registered households via email alerts.

In the spring of 2022, The Indy took another significant step in refining our role in the communities we serve by transferring all ownership and operations to a new, tax-exempt non-profit organization, The Hudson Valley News Foundation, Inc. The HVNF is a 501(c) (3) organization..

Our tax-exempt status provides us with another way to connect with our readers and advertisers while opening a second stream of income. Just as highly respected news sources like National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service are doing, we are now able to receive potentially tax-deductible contributions from those in the community who value us as an objective news source.

At the same time, we continue to offer advertisers the opportunity to buy space on our site, providing them with exposure to thousands of users in ways that will contribute to the welfare of the community as a whole.

From the perspective of our readers, the only visible change will be more and better coverage of news and trends in the rivertowns. The journalism we offer will remain focused on our local communities. Our overall mission is the same; our commitment to objectivity and to the welfare of the communities we serve remains unchanged.

We welcome your comments, and we hope you will consider supporting us financially.
